Maria Arevalo, dietary aide at Garden Terrace Alzheimer's Center of Excellence in Fort Worth, Texas, received Life Care Centers of America's Gulf States Region Whatever It Takes And Then Some Award on Sept. 24 for her dedication to customer service.

Executives from Life Care awarded Arevalo a $1,000 cash prize during an awards ceremony at the company's headquarters in Cleveland, Tennessee. She was chosen from among hundreds of associates in the Gulf States Region and was one of only eight associates from Life Care's more than 220 facilities nationwide to receive the award.

While she does her job well daily, Arevalo was particularly praised for a specific act of caring in 2013.

Arevalo stayed at the facility for four straight days when an ice storm made driving conditions hazardous. She made sure residents had their meals on time.

"She went on like it was nothing and had all the breakfast ready by the time the rest of the crew was able to get in due to the bad weather," read her nomination.

Arevalo shared, "When God puts that in your heart, you have to help others."

Life Care Centers of America's Whatever It Takes And Then Some program rewards associates for extraordinary acts of kindness. Monthly awards are presented in Life Care facilities nationwide based on nominations from fellow associates, family members, residents and guests. Each facility then chooses an annual winner, from which the divisional winners are selected.

"Dedicated caregivers routinely go far above and beyond their job descriptions, and Maria Arevalo certainly demonstrates by her example their professionalism and compassion for the residents they serve," said Beecher Hunter, Life Care president. "We are proud of Maria and the thousands she represents in their selfless approach to the needs of others."
